Second Tadoba Tigress Soft-Released at Sahyadri to Boost Population

The soft-release aims to seed a breeding nucleus in Sahyadri through a genetically distinct female under national scientific oversight.

Overview

  • T7-S2, a two-year-old female, was captured on December 8 in Tadoba’s Korala/Kolara core near Pandharpauni and cleared as fit for translocation after veterinary checks.
  • She was moved to the Sonarli acclimatisation enclosure inside Chandoli National Park on December 9 for a phased soft release before eventual entry into open forest.
  • The transfer is part of Operation TARA to rebuild Sahyadri’s tiger population and lower inbreeding risk across Maharashtra’s metapopulation.
  • WII’s K. Ramesh and Akash Patil are monitoring her behaviour in the enclosure, with NTCA observers Nandkishor Kale and Rohan Bhate overseeing the operation.
  • Tadoba’s Rapid Rescue Team and joint TATR–STR staff executed the capture and transport under senior forest officials, as the Centre has approved up to eight relocations to STR.
