Second Stage Sends The Fantasticks to Broadway as Part of Five-Show 2026–27 Season

The move modernizes a canonical musical for a new audience, promoting new plays through the company’s regional-to-New York development pipeline.

Overview

  • Second Stage announced its 2026–27 season on Wednesday and scheduled two productions at the Hayes Theater and three at the Irene Diamond Stage.
  • The Fantasticks will make its first Broadway bow at the Hayes with previews beginning October 22, 2026 and an opening night on November 16, 2026 under director-choreographer Christopher Gattelli.
  • Branden Jacobs-JenkinsGloria will join the Hayes in spring 2027 with previews starting March 17 and an April 5 opening, directed by Second Stage artistic director Evan Cabnet.
  • Off-Broadway programming at the Irene Diamond Stage includes world premieres of Bryna Turner’s The Visitors and Miranda Rose Hall’s Work of Devotion plus the New York premiere of Naomi Lorrain’s how to roll a blunt, all scheduled across fall 2026 and spring 2027.
  • This Fantasticks revival reconceives the central couple as a same-sex pair and replaces the original fathers with mothers, and it builds on earlier development runs at Flint Repertory Theatre, Provincetown Playhouse, and Coachella Valley Repertory.
