Second Postmortem Finds Rear-Entry Gunshot in Mir Raza Ali; Probe Overhauled

Pending forensic tests will determine whether the injuries amount to homicide, with results likely to shape the reconstituted police murder probe and a planned judicial commission.

Overview

  • An eight-member medical board exhumed Mir Raza Ali’s grave and completed a second postmortem on Saturday that preliminarily found a gunshot wound from the rear and multiple ante-mortem injuries.
  • Forensic teams collected 17 samples including tissue, bone, hair, nails and chemical swabs, and took DNA reference samples from Ali’s parents for laboratory testing at the University of Karachi.
  • Karachi police added Section 302 (murder) to the FIR, removed members of the earlier investigation team and formed a new five-member probe headed by DIG Amir Farooqi to re-open the case.
  • The Sindh government announced plans for a judicial commission led by High Court judges to oversee the inquiry and has said the family may nominate officers to the investigation team.
  • Final cause and identification remain pending on DNA, chemical and gunshot-residue results, which investigators say will determine next steps including possible arrests and the scope of judicial oversight.
