Search Suspended for Hiker Who Vanished in Desolation Wilderness

El Dorado County says the large-scale operation has ended with the missing-person investigation remaining active pending any new leads.

Overview

  • Sixty-year-old Jason Coughran disappeared after hiking into the Desolation Wilderness from the Fallen Leaf Lake trailhead and was last believed to be near Angora Peak.
  • Nearly 200 personnel from more than 30 agencies and volunteers joined the search using foot teams, vehicles, drones and canine units to comb the roughly 64,000-acre wilderness.
  • Searchers faced steep, glacial terrain and rapidly changing high-elevation weather that limited access and complicated efforts to locate Coughran.
  • Officials have suspended the large-scale search but say the missing-person investigation is still open and that additional searches will be launched if new leads develop.
  • Authorities released Coughran’s physical description and possible clothing to the public and are urging anyone with information to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office as volunteer and agency resources stand ready to respond.
