Search Continues in Irun for Suspect Who Jumped Into Bidasoa River During Police Pursuit

Operations will resume this morning despite rough currents that limit visibility.

Overview

  • Police were alerted around 1:34 a.m. Sunday to two men forcing coin boxes at a Behobia car-wash in Irun.
  • As officers arrived, both suspects fled and one reportedly leapt into the Bidasoa between the Behobia bridge and Isla de los Faisanes before disappearing.
  • Firefighters, the Red Cross, Salvamento Marítimo’s Helimer helicopter, Ertzaintza’s aquatic unit and a rescue dog team were deployed to search the river.
  • Strong currents, low visibility and stormy weather have hindered progress, with search tactics reassessed and efforts set to continue.
  • The second suspect, 31, was detained on suspicion of attempted burglary, and police say a 100-gram hashish tablet found during a preventive search led to a drug probe; French authorities were notified via the CCPA for coordination.
