Search Continues for Missing Hiker in Desolation Wilderness

Deteriorating high-elevation weather is hampering rescue teams' access to the remote search area.

Overview

  • Jason Coughran, 60, was last heard from about 4 p.m. on May 25 after entering Desolation Wilderness from the Fallen Leaf Lake/Glen Alpine trailhead.
  • El Dorado County search-and-rescue teams are actively combing the wilderness with ground crews, canine units, drone assets and Tahoe-area teams.
  • Authorities say Coughran is about 6 feet 2 inches tall, roughly 150 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes and may have been wearing khaki shorts and a long-sleeve white and blue shirt.
  • A missing-person flyer placed Coughran near Angora Peak around 11 a.m. on the day he was last seen and officials are asking hikers who may have seen him to call 530-621-6600 or 530-573-3051.
  • Weather in the South Lake Tahoe area turned windy with gusts above 40 mph and pockets of light snow and fog, and the rugged, 63,960-acre Desolation Wilderness makes reach and visibility difficult for search teams.
