Scientists Grow Human Cortical Tissue Inside Mice

The team says the grafted tissue could provide an in vivo window on human brain development and injury for research.

  • On Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, a Stanford-led team reported in Nature that they transplanted lab-grown human cortical organoids into mice engineered to lack most of their cortex and hippocampus.
  • The researchers used a genetic deletion to create space in newborn mice and then implanted three-dimensional human cortical organoids that expanded and occupied much of the missing cortex.
  • The human grafts produced a wide range of human cortical cell types, including rare von Economo neurons, formed long-range connections into the mouse nervous system, and gave implanted animals intermediate gains on some memory and motor tests compared with cortex-free and normal mice.
  • The model has clear limits because the human tissue remained structurally disorganized, matured slowly, required special rearing and immunocompromised hosts for survival, and showed marked sensitivity to low-oxygen injury that harmed human cells but not ordinary mouse brain tissue.
  • The authors and outside ethicists emphasize strict oversight, caution against repeating the approach in primates, and say next steps are detailed anatomical and functional study to assess scientific value and ethical safeguards before wider use.
