Schoolgirl in Life-Threatening Condition After Shildon Rail Incident

Police say there is no sign of criminality.

  • After an incident on tracks in Shildon near the Locomotion museum shortly after 8am Wednesday, a teenage girl was airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
  • British Transport Police said her injuries are life-threatening and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
  • Great North Air Ambulance activated at 8.06am, arrived at 8.15am with two doctors and a paramedic, and worked with the North East Ambulance Service, which sent a double‑crewed ambulance, a duty officer and a clinical team leader.
  • Lines between Darlington and Bishop Auckland were blocked during the response and reopened around 11am, with trains now running as normal.
  • Greenfield Academy confirmed the casualty is a pupil and said staff are supporting classmates and the family.
