Schlitz Put on Hiatus After 177 Years With One Final 80-Barrel Brew Saturday

Pabst cites rising logistics costs alongside weak demand.

Overview

  • Wisconsin Brewing Company, which received permission from Pabst, will brew the last Schlitz in Verona on Saturday after regular production stopped months ago.
  • Preorders open Saturday on the brewery’s website and at the taproom, with a limited release set for June 27.
  • Pabst confirmed the brand is on hiatus, saying storage and shipping costs rose as sales fell below contract-brewing minimums at a Busch plant in Texas.
  • Milwaukee Brat House will host goodbye parties on May 29 in Shorewood and May 30 downtown using its remaining supply, and Wisconsin Brewing plans a June 27 celebration.
  • Founded in 1849 and known as the beer that made Milwaukee famous for supplying post–Chicago Fire drinkers, Schlitz relaunched in 2008 under Pabst but never returned to its former scale.
