SAWS Warns of Monday Heat and Extreme Fire Danger After Weekend Storms

Emergency services remain on alert following forecasts of very hot conditions in interior parts of the Northern, Western and Eastern Cape.

Overview

  • SAWS forecasts extremely high fire danger on Monday over the interior of the Northern Cape, the Cape Winelands, Central and Little Karoo, and the eastern Overberg, extending to parts of the Eastern Cape.
  • Heat advisories include very hot to extremely hot conditions in Eastern Cape municipalities such as Dr Beyers Naudé, Blue Crane Route, Sundays River Valley and Raymond Mhlaba.
  • A yellow level 2 alert is in place Monday for possible severe thunderstorms over parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng, with isolated afternoon thundershowers also expected in the North West, Free State and the eastern interior.
  • Over the weekend, SAWS issued severe thunderstorm warnings with Sunday’s yellow level 2 covering eastern North West, southern Limpopo and northern Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and Gauteng saw cooler, wet conditions with a 60% rain chance.
  • Residents are urged to avoid flooded routes, take heat and fire precautions and follow official updates, and a reported Orange Level 5 thunderstorm warning for parts of the Free State and North West was noted in one outlet but remains disputed.
