SAWS Updates Weekend Alerts: Thunderstorm Risk Shifts to Limpopo and North West as Cape Fire Danger Persists

SAWS uses graded, impact-based warnings to steer location-specific preparation.

Overview

  • A yellow level 2 warning is in effect on Sunday for severe thunderstorms over the Western Bushveld of Limpopo and the extreme eastern parts of the North West, with heavy downpours, hail, strong winds and frequent lightning expected.
  • Earlier high-tier alerts included an orange level 5 for extreme eastern Mpumalanga and Limpopo and level 4 for central Mpumalanga, Limpopo and much of KwaZulu-Natal, signalling risks from flooding and damage to infrastructure, vehicles, livelihoods and livestock.
  • The eThekwini Municipality urged vigilance as forecasts pointed to widespread showers and intense thunderstorms across most of KwaZulu-Natal, with a cold front cited as the driver of the severe conditions.
  • Marine advisories in northern KwaZulu-Natal flagged damaging winds and waves between Port Edward and St Lucia, with the potential for short-term disruption to small harbours and coastal infrastructure.
  • Extremely high fire-danger warnings remain in parts of the Northern and Western Cape, with FDI values above 75 and rapid fire spread possible, including updates for Monday covering areas such as Namakwa, Matzikama and Swartland.
