SAWS Raises Sunday Storm Alert to Level 4 for KZN as Heat and Fire Risks Persist

Separate Level 2 alerts stretch over multiple interior provinces, with extreme fire danger forecast for parts of the Northern Cape.

Overview

  • The weather service upgraded KwaZulu-Natal’s central and western areas to a yellow Level 4 severe-thunderstorm warning for Sunday, citing heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail with potential flooding and infrastructure damage.
  • Yellow Level 2 thunderstorm warnings on Sunday cover Gauteng, the Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga, central and southern Limpopo, plus the eastern parts of the North West and the Free State.
  • Extremely high fire danger is expected across vast parts of the Northern Cape and in sections of the Free State and North West, even as storm risks rise elsewhere.
  • Forecasts indicate partly cloudy, warm to hot conditions with isolated to scattered thundershowers across central and eastern regions, with very uncomfortable heat and humidity persisting in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal.
  • City outlooks reflect the contrast, with Durban near 24–30°C Saturday and 23–27°C Sunday with showers, while inland centres like Mahikeng and Bloemfontein trend hotter under scattered storms and high UV levels.
