Saudi Statistics Agency Reports 1.7 Million Pilgrims in 2026 Hajj

Drawn from Interior Ministry records, the official tally highlights heavy reliance on air travel and will shape transport and service planning for future seasons.

Overview

  • The General Authority for Statistics released the official Hajj report Tuesday and put this year’s total at 1,707,301 pilgrims and worshippers.
  • The agency says 1,546,655 pilgrims came from abroad while 160,646 were internal pilgrims made up of Saudi citizens and residents.
  • Most foreign arrivals travelled by air with 1,485,729 passengers, compared with 54,429 by land and 6,497 by sea.
  • The report gives a gender split of 893,396 men and 813,905 women and notes that figures are based on administrative records from the Ministry of Interior, which the agency uses as its primary data source.
  • Placed in historical context, the statistics push the cumulative total since official counts began in 1970 past 106 million and underline planning challenges for transport, accommodation and security after the 2012 peak and the pandemic-related low in 2020.
