SAT Clarifies No New Tax on Cash Deposits Under 15,000 Pesos Per Month

Banks must report higher monthly accumulations, which can trigger checks against taxpayers' filings.

Overview

  • Mexico’s tax authority reaffirmed that deposits below 15,000 pesos per person each month at the same bank do not incur a new tax, noting the prior cash-deposit tax was scrapped in 2013.
  • Financial institutions must report when a customer’s cash deposits exceed 15,000 pesos in a month at one bank, and such notices can lead to reviews to verify the origin of funds rather than automatic penalties.
  • The 2026 fiscal rules set UDI-based references: up to 1,500 UDIs per account per month is not verified, and alerts are required when monthly deposits surpass 3,000 UDIs, roughly 30,000 pesos depending on UDI value.
  • The SAT says any deposit or transfer, including small amounts or movements between friends and family, can be examined within an investigation, so no minimum amount guarantees exemption from scrutiny.
  • Banks have circulated internal advisories about patterns that may draw attention, and authorities urge taxpayers to keep invoices and contracts, align declarations with deposits, and consult accountants ahead of annual filings in April.
