Santa Barbara County Holds Fourth Annual Back-to-School Health Fair in Santa Maria

The free event provides vaccinations, sports physicals and school supplies to reduce costs for families and link them to local social services.

Overview

  • The county public health department ran the first of three fairs in Santa Maria to help families prepare children for school entry.
  • Attendees could get sports physicals and school-required immunizations at no cost to meet school health requirements.
  • Children received free backpacks, school supplies and hygiene kits to lower out-of-pocket back-to-school expenses.
  • Nearly 30 local organizations were on site to offer immigration help, nutrition education and mental health information, and the county has added Mixteco translation at its Santa Maria clinic.
  • This is the program's fourth year and it builds on prior turnout of about 2,400 people across the three-site series while county clinics continue to offer many services year-round.
