Overview
- An off-duty Sandwich police officer who drove through a homeowner’s bushes into a parked car Friday night was identified at the scene and taken into custody on suspicion of impairment.
- Massachusetts State Police troopers conducted field sobriety tests, processed the officer at the Bourne barracks, and charged him with OUI liquor, negligent operation, marked-lanes violations, and driving an unregistered vehicle.
- The officer was not injured but his SUV had heavy front-end damage and the crash was reported to have occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Grand Oak Road in Forestdale.
- Sandwich police placed the officer on administrative leave and opened a separate internal investigation while also probing an allegation that a relative assaulted an independent news videographer at the scene.
- The officer is due to be arraigned in Barnstable District Court on the next business day and the criminal case will run separately from any department discipline or review.
