San Javier Cancer Dispute Escalates as PP to File Criminal Complaint Against Podemos Deputy

The move follows the mayor’s expulsion of a Podemos councillor after accusing him of using his colorectal cancer politically.

Overview

  • The clash began at the Feb. 12 San Javier plenary when PP councillor Estíbaliz Masegosa reproached Podemos’s Matías Cantabella for missing an Oct. 8 meeting, which he said he skipped due to cancer treatment.
  • Mayor José Miguel Luengo expelled Cantabella and then spoke for about three minutes accusing him of exploiting his illness, saying his attitude was a disgrace for cancer patients and their families.
  • Podemos deputy Javier Sánchez Serna shared the video on X, demanded the mayor’s resignation, and insulted him using the phrase “hijo de puta.”
  • Luengo confirmed the PP of the Region of Murcia will file a criminal complaint for injurias against Sánchez Serna seeking €30,000, with any award pledged to the local AECC.
  • Cantabella says he has posted about his treatment to break taboos, acknowledges he was vehement in the session, and criticizes the mayor’s conduct as lacking humanity.
