San Francisco to Add Nearly 750 Infant-Toddler Childcare Spots This Summer

The city is using unspent 2018 “Baby C” funds to expand income-based free or discounted care.

Overview

  • Mayor Daniel Lurie announced an expansion that adds nearly 750 infant-toddler early-learning seats this summer and lifts capacity by more than 8 percent.
  • The new seats will be located across the Sunset, Parkside, Richmond, Bayview, Portola, Mission Bay, Excelsior, Glen Park and SoMa.
  • Providers will include a mix of licensed family childcare homes and early learning centers.
  • The city is drawing on the voter-approved “Baby C” fund to offer free care up to 150% of area median income ($230,000 for a family of four) and 50% subsidies up to 200% AMI ($310,000).
  • City leaders say broader access helps families remain in San Francisco and supports children’s development, a priority as childcare in California averages about $17,000 a year and can reach $29,000 for infants.
