San Francisco Sues Tenderloin Landlord Over Tenants Living in Fire‑Damaged Building

City Attorney David Chiu says the suit seeks to force repairs and recover more than $650,000 after inspections found unresolved safety violations and dangerous cooking devices.

Overview

  • The City Attorney filed the lawsuit against Golden Tiger LLC and owner Adam La this week, accusing them of creating a public nuisance by allowing people to live in a building deemed uninhabitable.
  • The complaint alleges the owner let tenants reoccupy 155 Hyde St. without restored electricity, gas or hot water and provided butane camping stoves that the fire department called a significant fire hazard.
  • The June 11, 2025 blaze damaged the building’s electrical system, broiler, alarms and elevator, prompting a multiagency response that temporarily relocated roughly 89 to 90 residents, most of whom are immigrant families.
  • City departments issued nine notices of violation and eight orders of abatement that remain unresolved, and the city is seeking more than $650,000 to recoup emergency power, relocation and other costs.
  • The owner has been marketing the building for sale while the violations persist, the landlord has not publicly commented, and the case is scheduled for trial in December 2026.
