San Francisco Readies Mission District for Carnaval Parade and Multi-Day Street Closures

SFMTA is restricting vehicle access to reduce congestion during World Cup–themed Carnaval festivities.

Overview

  • SFMTA will close streets around the Mission’s Harrison corridor starting Friday and keep them closed through early Monday for event setup and takedown with vehicle access limited to local residents.
  • The Carnaval Grand Parade is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m., beginning at 24th and Harrison, proceeding down Mission Street and ending at 15th Street.
  • Officials estimate roughly 5,500 performers from about 60 groups will spread across roughly 20 blocks in the Mission’s Latino Cultural District.
  • Muni is urging attendees to use public transit because neighborhood parking will be severely limited and adjacent streets are expected to face delays during the weekend.
  • This year’s theme, 'La Copa del Pueblo' or The People’s Cup, ties the festival to the upcoming FIFA World Cup at Levi’s Stadium and may increase local foot traffic for vendors and residents; Carnaval has been held in the city since 1979.
