San Diego to Reopen 13 Mission Bay Restrooms
State grant money plus council budget reallocations will fund the reopenings through the end of 2026.
Overview
- Mayor Todd Gloria announced Wednesday that 13 restrooms at Mission Bay Park will reopen starting Aug. 14 and remain open through the end of the calendar year.
- The city listed the 13 facilities to be restored, including El Carmel, Ventura Point, Bonita Cove East, Hospitality Point, Vacation Isle West, South Shores, North Cove, Crown Point South, Ski Beach North, Ski Beach Middle, Tecolote North, Playa Pacifica III and De Anza South.
- City officials said the temporary funding comes from a higher-than-expected state grant plus budget reallocations from council offices and cuts to community project programs in Districts 1 and 3.
- The closures began in July as part of Mayor Gloria’s broader budget proposal to close dozens of city-run restrooms to help close a $118 million shortfall, with the Office of the Independent Budget Analyst estimating the Mission Bay cuts would save about $547,000.
- Public complaints about long lines, long walks and unsanitary conditions prompted officials to restore the facilities for now, and city leaders say they will evaluate whether to fund the restrooms in the 2027 budget while other contested measures are also being reconsidered.
