San Diego County OKs Plan to Boost Affordable Parking at Underused Downtown Garages

The directive launches a review to better use county garages after hours to lower parking costs.

Overview

  • The Board of Supervisors, which voted 4–0 Tuesday, directed the chief administrative officer to evaluate ways to expand public use of county-run parking in downtown San Diego.
  • The effort targets the Ash Street, Cedar-Kettner, and James R. Mills garages, which together offer more than 800 spaces managed by ACE Parking and often sit open in evenings and on weekends.
  • Chief Administrative Officer Ebony Shelton and staff will work with local groups on outreach so drivers know where spaces are and what they cost.
  • Staff will study options such as discounted transit or parking packages, shuttles, vendor incentives, and changes to rates and hours, with annual reports on usage and revenue.
  • Supervisors signaled guardrails as the work begins, with Paloma Aguirre urging protection of the three-hour business-hours limit and Joel Anderson saying added supply near Petco Park could ease prices for residents, workers, and visitors.
