San Diego Advances 680-Mile Speed Limit Plan to Curb Traffic Deaths

Installation would begin in July if adopted.

Overview

  • City Council’s infrastructure committee approved the Comprehensive Speed Management Plan, sending it to the full council for a final vote.
  • The plan identifies more than 1,500 street segments for lower limits, prioritizing business corridors, high-crash areas, and key pedestrian and bicycle routes.
  • Nearly 400 of the targeted miles are in or near schools, including about 371 miles within 500 feet set for 15 or 20 mph and 27 miles on approaches set for 25 mph.
  • Implementation is budgeted at roughly $2.4 million for about 3,000 new signs and 1,200 poles, with a rollout expected to take about a year starting with school areas.
  • Using authority under California’s AB 43 to move beyond the 85th-percentile rule, the safety-focused plan supports Vision Zero and has backing from the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, Circulate San Diego, and San Diego 350.
