San Antonio Contractor Gets 37 Months for Tax Evasion on Tax Day

Prosecutors cast the repeat offense as a warning to those who try to dodge federal taxes.

Overview

  • Juan R. Gonzalez, 52, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison on Wednesday, the filing deadline known as Tax Day.
  • A judge ordered Gonzalez to pay $370,752.64 in restitution to the IRS for unpaid taxes.
  • Prosecutors said he failed to file 2020 and 2021 returns and hid income by dealing in cash, commingling business and personal funds, and using a nominee name.
  • He was indicted in May 2025 on 22 counts that included structuring and identity theft, then pleaded guilty to one tax evasion count on Jan. 7.
  • Gonzalez was previously convicted of tax evasion in 2011, and U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons said the new sentence underscores continued enforcement against repeat offenders.
