- This week Samsung published support documentation showing One UI 9 enforces escalating lockouts for failed PIN, pattern, or password entries and will permanently lock a device after the 13th consecutive failed attempt.
- The update defines a clear timeout schedule that grows with each threshold — for example five wrong entries triggers a one-minute lockout, nine causes a 90-minute lockout, twelve triggers a 24-hour lockout, and the 13th locks the phone until a factory reset.
- Samsung built in safeguards to reduce accidental permanent locks, including ignoring repeated identical incorrect entries so the same wrong code entered back-to-back counts once and showing on-screen warnings that display remaining attempts.
- One UI 9 is stricter than Google’s Android 17 policy because it caps total consecutive failures at 13 rather than Android 17’s broader 20-attempt framework and sets a specific escalation schedule for timeouts.
- The change is already active on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and will reach more Galaxy devices in coming months, so users should back up data and be aware that a permanent lock will make on-device files inaccessible without a factory reset.
