Samsung Wallet Becomes Digital Key for Select Volkswagen ID EVs

Compatible Galaxy phones can use ultra‑wideband or NFC to lock, unlock, start and share keys on eligible Volkswagen ID cars in Europe.

Overview

  • Samsung and Volkswagen have begun a Europe rollout that lets Samsung Wallet store Digital Keys for specific ID models including the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3 Neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID. Buzz.
  • The system uses ultra‑wideband for hands‑free entry and NFC for tap‑to‑unlock and start, and it also supports remote trunk access and timed or limited key sharing for other drivers or valets.
  • Compatibility is limited to vehicles produced on or after April 27, 2026 that run Volkswagen ID software version 6.0.1 and are fitted with the factory 'Preparation for Digital Key' option.
  • Samsung says Digital Keys are stored on the phone, protected by Samsung Knox and EAL6+ certified measures, and can be removed remotely through Samsung Find if a device is lost or stolen.
  • Volkswagen has not confirmed U.S. support for Samsung Wallet keys and may follow a different path in North America, with separate reports saying some upcoming VW models will support Apple Wallet car keys.
