Samsung Expands One UI 8.5 to Older Galaxies as One UI 9 Tests Begin

Bringing flagship UI changes to mid‑range and budget models accelerates Samsung’s Android 17 development.

Overview

  • As of early June, Samsung is rolling the stable One UI 8.5 update beyond its newest flagships to many older Galaxy phones and some tablets across Europe, India, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and other markets.
  • One UI 8.5 delivers a modest visual refresh and specific new functions such as a more customisable Quick Panel, direct voicemail, partial screen recording, Apple AirDrop/Quick Share support, pollen data in Weather, and new camera filters.
  • Updates are delivered in phased regional waves as large OTA packages that commonly include the May 2026 security patch and device‑specific firmware codes, with download sizes often around 2.7–4+ GB.
  • At the same time, Samsung has started internal testing of One UI 9, the Android 17‑based followup, for the Galaxy S25 series after a hidden test build was spotted on Samsung’s OTA servers, a sign the beta timeline may be faster than in prior cycles.
  • For users this means older phones are getting flagship features sooner but feature parity will vary by model and region, and S25 owners could see a public One UI 9 beta earlier while other generations may wait.
