Samsung Adds Ads to 2024 Family Hub Fridges With Update Rolling Out This Week

The new widget places contextual promotions on idle screens by default, and opting out removes widget functionality.

Overview

  • A software update is rolling out to U.S. 2024 Family Hub models this week, with ads expected to appear starting Nov. 3 when the refrigerator is idle.
  • The Cover Screen gains a rectangular widget that cycles information and promotions roughly every 10 seconds, and the new Daily Board includes one ad tile among five.
  • Samsung says the placements are contextual rather than personalized, and initial campaigns will promote Samsung products only.
  • Owners can dismiss individual ads for the duration of a campaign or turn off advertising in Settings, which currently disables all widgets.
  • Ads are enabled by default, do not show when art or album themes are active, and will appear on the fridges’ 21.5- or 32-inch displays in models priced about $1,899 to $3,499.
