Sammy Watkins Hired as Ocoee High School Wide Receivers Coach

The hire brings a former Clemson standout who won a Super Bowl to a 6-5 Florida program where he will begin his coaching career mentoring young receivers.

Overview

  • Ocoee High School announced this week on Instagram, in a post with head coach Buck Gurley, that Sammy Watkins will join the staff as the Knights’ wide receivers coach.
  • The school’s announcement described Watkins as a 'dynamic playmaker' who will teach route technique, work habits and game-day preparation to Ocoee’s receiving corps.
  • Watkins was a two-time first-team All-American at Clemson, was the No. 4 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, won Super Bowl LIV with the Kansas City Chiefs and retired from the NFL in 2022.
  • A previously discussed opportunity to join Clemson’s coaching staff did not materialize, so Watkins is beginning his formal coaching career at the high-school level rather than in college.
  • Ocoee went 6-5 and lost in the FHSAA Class 7A regional quarterfinals last season, and the program expects Watkins’ pro experience to boost player development, on-field technique and local recruiting interest.
