Salmonella Outbreak Tied to Sinaloa Jalapeños Prompts Widespread Recalls

Federal traceback by the FDA identified Sinaloa-grown jalapeños as the source, prompting recalls of fresh peppers, packaged salsas and other prepared foods.

Overview

  • Federal investigators linked the multistate Salmonella Javiana outbreak to fresh jalapeños grown in Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, and the supplier agreed to recall the implicated peppers.
  • Taylor Fresh Foods (Taylor Farms) issued a recall of prepared foods containing the implicated jalapeños on Aug. 9 that reached retail centers in about 26 states.
  • As of Aug. 10 federal officials reported 345 confirmed illnesses and 36 hospitalizations across 27 states in the outbreak investigation.
  • Major retailers including Whole Foods have pulled dozens of jalapeño-containing produce and ready-to-eat items with best-if-used-by dates through Aug. 16, 2026, and consumers are urged to check UPCs, discard or return affected products, and thoroughly clean surfaces to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Public-health notices from the FDA, CDC and USDA FSIS highlight how one contaminated produce ingredient can spread through supply chains and signal that more downstream recalls and tracebacks are possible as investigators continue their work.
