SAG-AFTRA Halts Studio Talks Without Deal as WGA Opens Bargaining Under Staff Picket

Formal negotiations are slated to resume this spring before the June 30 contract deadline.

Overview

  • SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP said talks ran several extra days and will restart later this spring under a media blackout, with the current pact set to expire June 30.
  • SAG-AFTRA began bargaining Feb. 9, extended past the original March 6 target and worked through the weekend before pausing without an agreement.
  • Artificial intelligence remains a central dispute, including SAG-AFTRA’s push to curb use of AI “synthetic performers” and a floated union-fund levy sometimes described as a “Tilly tax.”
  • The WGA started negotiations with the studios at SAG-AFTRA headquarters, while the Writers Guild Staff Union picketed outside with an inflatable Scabby the Rat as LAPD directed demonstrators to public sidewalks.
  • The WGSU strike continues with unfair labor practice allegations the WGA West denies, as the bargaining calendar advances toward the WGA’s May 1 expiration and DGA talks set for May 11.
