Sacramento Police to Pull SROs From Natomas Schools, Reassign Transit Officers to Patrol in January 2026

Staffing shortages totaling 89 vacancies are driving a shift of specialized posts to bolster citywide emergency response.

Overview

  • Starting in January 2026, Sacramento police will remove School Resource Officers from Natomas Unified campuses and redeploy them to patrol.
  • CBS Sacramento reported the change includes three SROs and a sergeant at Natomas, along with 12 Sacramento Regional Transit positions moving to patrol and other assignments.
  • Natomas Unified says it will replace SRO functions with a district-hired safety lead stationed at high schools and expanded Campus Safety Specialists across campuses.
  • The new campus safety roles are school employees rather than law enforcement, some positions are unarmed, and police say patrol officers will still respond to schools as needed.
  • SacRT plans to rely on Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies and continue using Sacramento PD’s Real Time Information Center for 24/7 security operations, as parents express differing views on the tradeoffs.
