Overview
- A Malta Air-operated Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen returned to Thessaloniki after a cabin window dislodged during climb on Friday, July 10, and eyewitnesses said one passenger was pulled partly through the opening.
- Passengers reported a loud bang, rapid cabin depressurisation and deployed oxygen masks as the man’s head and shoulders were briefly outside the fuselage before his wife and other travellers pulled him back.
- The injured 61-year-old Serbian passenger was hospitalised with neck and shoulder injuries and friction burns and several other people were medically checked as a precaution.
- The Hellenic Air and Rail Safety Investigation Authority (HARSIA) has opened a formal inquiry, the aircraft remains grounded in Thessaloniki, and the FAA, NTSB and Boeing have offered or prepared support for the probe.
- Preliminary local reports and circulated video point to possible engine debris striking the window but investigators have not confirmed a root cause, a finding that could influence inspections and maintenance checks on older Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft.
