Russian Strikes Cripple Kyiv Heat Plant as Kharkiv Endures New Blackouts

Kyiv's mayor says repairs at the wrecked Darnytsia plant will take roughly two months, leaving thousands relying on emergency heat points.

Overview

  • Morning strikes on February 5 hit Kharkiv’s energy infrastructure, causing unstable or complete power outages and stopping the metro and most electric surface transport, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
  • City authorities in Kharkiv reported ongoing work to stabilize supply, with some outages for buildings already without heat lasting three to five hours.
  • Kyiv’s Darnytsia combined heat and power plant suffered critical damage in the February 3 barrage and will need at least two months to restore, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
  • The plant had supplied heat to more than 1,100 multi-storey buildings in Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts, and the city has opened additional heating points, connected mobile boiler houses, and requested State Emergency Service support.
  • AFP reporters described extensive destruction at the Darnytsia site, and Ukraine’s largest private energy provider called Tuesday’s strike the most powerful since the start of 2026.
