Russian Strike Damages Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and Dovzhenko Film Studios

UNESCO has offered to assess damage while Kyiv is pressing the G7 for more air-defense support as leaders respond to the assault.

Overview

  • A large overnight strike on Monday, June 15, set the Dormition Cathedral at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on fire and hit the Dovzhenko film studios, Ukrainian officials said.
  • Ukrainian authorities reported at least five dead, dozens injured, and emergency teams responding to roughly 50 sites across the city after widespread power outages affected about 140,000 families.
  • The Ukrainian Air Force said Moscow launched about 70 missiles and 611 drones in the operation, and the Security Service of Ukraine displayed wreckage it said came from Shahed drones.
  • Russia denied deliberately targeting the monastery and blamed a Western-supplied Patriot air-defense missile for the fire, creating a contested attribution that international bodies and Kyiv are investigating.
  • UNESCO confirmed significant interior and exterior damage to the World Heritage site, the culture minister said thousands of historic costumes were destroyed at Dovzhenko, and Zelenski has urged the G7 to step up air-defense support.
