Russian Overnight Strikes Kill 13 in Ukraine as Air Force Says It Shot Down 174 Drones

Kyiv warns the scale of the attacks is overwhelming defences, calling for more interceptor missiles, air-defence systems and tougher sanctions to protect civilians and infrastructure.

Overview

  • Russian missile and drone strikes hit at least 22 targets and killed 13 people while injuring about 90 across multiple regions, Ukrainian officials reported.
  • The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 174 Shahed-type drones and five Banderol missiles, and used electronic warfare that caused some munitions to fail before impact.
  • Strikes concentrated in Odesa Oblast cut power and water to parts of Odesa city and caused civilian injuries, while Kharkiv saw a high-rise hit that destroyed several floors and Kyiv Oblast reported civilian deaths in the village of Pukhivka.
  • Kyiv is pressing international partners for specific systems and weapons—Patriot interceptors, SAMP/T, NASAMS, HAWK interceptors and F-16 fighters—arguing those deliveries would reduce civilian harm.
  • The attacks are part of renewed, large-scale barrages since late July that are steadily straining Ukraine’s air-defence resources and raising concerns about continued damage from falling debris and exhausted stockpiles.
