Russian Frigate Fires Warning Shots Near UK-Registered Yacht in English Channel

The Ministry of Defence has opened an investigation as London and Moscow offer differing safety-focused accounts that raise questions about rules of engagement at sea.

Overview

  • A Russian frigate identified as the Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots close to a UK-registered yacht on Tuesday about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, the Russian defence ministry and UK sources said.
  • The yacht reported no injuries or damage and continued to Cherbourg after a Royal Navy seaboat from HMS Tyne visited to check on the crew and gather information.
  • Moscow said radio calls, signal flares and sound signals were ignored and that shots were fired across the yacht’s course when it closed to roughly 150 metres; the UK MoD said the shots were not aimed at the vessel and appeared intended to prevent a possible collision.
  • HMS Mersey was already monitoring the Russian ship at the time and the UK Ministry of Defence has begun an inquiry while treating the episode as isolated and not formally linking it to the recent boarding of the sanctioned tanker Smyrtos.
  • The incident highlights risks in the busy Channel, the routine practice of Royal Navy shadowing of foreign warships, and the thorny legal and operational questions about escalation, warning shots, and civilian safety during transits.
