Russian Drone Barrage Hits Zaporizhzhia and Multiple Sumy Communities

A tactic of massed drones to overload air defenses has increased civilian harm, drawing criminal investigations and further disrupting transport and services.

Overview

  • The Zaporizhzhia strike, which hit overnight on June 16–17, killed one person when a drone struck a car and wounded at least seven others, officials said.
  • Regional authorities reported dozens of Shahed and FPV drones over Zaporizhzhia and said strikes started fires and damaged homes and part of Zaporizhzhia National University.
  • Russian attacks struck six communities across Sumy region overnight, injuring at least three people and destroying private homes, farm buildings and local infrastructure.
  • Ukrainian investigators have opened criminal cases under Article 438 of the Criminal Code to probe strikes that hit civilian objects and caused noncombatant casualties.
  • The assaults continue a pattern of mixed Shahed, Geran-2, Molniya and FPV drone waves that strain air defenses and have disrupted rail links and Black Sea logistics, increasing humanitarian pressure on rear regions.
