Russian Combat Drone Strikes Apartment in Romania as Ukraine and Russia Exchange Mass Drone and Air Attacks

The cross‑border hit signals a spillover of Russia’s drone campaign into NATO territory and has driven allied calls for faster delivery of air‑defence systems.

Overview

  • Overnight on May 28–29 a Russian combat drone entered Romanian airspace and crashed into a high‑rise in Galați, causing a fire, injuring two people and forcing about 70 residents to evacuate.
  • Romania summoned the Russian ambassador, convened its national defence council, put fighters on patrol and NATO and EU leaders condemned the incident as a dangerous escalation.
  • Ukraine’s Air Forces reported that its air defences neutralized 217 of 232 drones launched in the same attack wave, while the General Staff confirmed strikes on Russian fuel and logistics sites including facilities in Volgograd, Tuapse and Yaroslavl area.
  • Ukrainian security services said they interdicted planned attacks and detained operatives, including a foil of a shipment carrying an explosive-armed drone bound for Odesa and arrests of agents alleged to work for Russian services.
  • The incident has increased pressure from Kyiv and its partners for accelerated air‑defence deliveries to the region, sharper sanctions on Moscow and closer NATO coordination to prevent further spillover into EU territory.
