Russia Secures $9 Billion to Advance Turkey’s Akkuyu Nuclear Project

The $9 billion backs Rosatom’s build-own-operate project at Akkuyu under Turkey’s 2010 agreement.

Overview

  • Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Russia has arranged roughly $9 billion in new financing for the Akkuyu nuclear plant.
  • He said the funding is expected to be deployed in 2026–2027, including an estimated $4–5 billion flowing to Turkey in 2026.
  • Turkey continues to target 2026 for the first Akkuyu reactor to begin generating electricity.
  • The project consists of four Russian-designed VVER Generation 3+ reactors, each rated at about 1,200 MWt.
  • Rosatom is building and set to operate the plant under a 2010 accord reported at about $20 billion, using a build-own-operate model.
