Overview
- The Vankor–Payakha mainline was officially opened and the first cargo was loaded at the new Sever Bay terminal into an Arctic tanker on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
- Sever Bay’s first-stage handling capacity is reported at 30 million tonnes per year, while the full pipeline system is designed for up to about 100 million tonnes annually.
- Rosneft has set a near-term goal of reaching the 30 million tonnes/year throughput by the second half of 2027 and Russian officials aim to raise Northern Sea Route traffic to roughly 70 million tonnes a year by 2030.
- Commercial scaling will depend on longer navigation seasons, more ice‑class tankers and escorts, expanded icebreaker support, and greater insurance and reinsurance available for Arctic voyages.
