Russia Nears Vegetable Self-Sufficiency After 2025 Harvest

The agriculture ministry attributes the gains to greenhouse growth with state support.

Overview

  • Preliminary data put 2025 vegetable output at about 7.6 million tonnes across open and protected ground.
  • Self-sufficiency in vegetables reached 89.6%, just short of the Food Security Doctrine’s 90% benchmark.
  • Producer prices fell year over year, with cucumbers down 5.7% to 143.3 rubles per kg and tomatoes down 17% to 144.3 rubles per kg.
  • Rosstat reports retail tomato prices roughly 2.1% lower than a year earlier, while cucumber prices are about unchanged.
  • More than 340 greenhouse farms operate across 76 regions, with over 30 new projects planned through 2027 exceeding 157,000 tonnes in capacity alongside subsidies, storage upgrades, a 3.5 billion-ruble 2026 allocation, and work to resume concessional lending.
