Russia Launches Massive Overnight Missile and Drone Barrage on Ukraine

The attack exposed gaps in Ukraine’s ability to stop ballistic and hypersonic strikes and prompted urgent calls for more Western interceptor missiles.

Overview

  • Ukrainian officials said Russian forces fired about 73 missiles and roughly 650 drones in the overnight assault, with Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv and other cities hit.
  • The strikes caused dozens of civilian deaths and many injuries and left a multi‑story apartment block partially collapsed in Kyiv with fears people are trapped under rubble.
  • Ukraine’s air force said it shot down the vast majority of drones but only about half of the missiles, noting that hypersonic weapons were among the projectiles that penetrated defences.
  • Kyiv renewed urgent requests for Patriot‑style interceptors and other missile interceptors as rescue teams restore power, fight fires and search damaged residential areas.
  • The attack continues a pattern since mid‑May of Russian saturation tactics and comes as Ukraine steps up strikes on Russian oil and border targets, raising the risk of further escalation.
