Russia Launches Massive Missile and Drone Barrage on Kyiv Using Hypersonic Oreshnik

The strike exposed shortages in Ukraine’s air-defence interceptors, prompting renewed international pressure for more missile defenses.

Overview

  • Ukrainian officials said the overnight assault on May 24 involved roughly 600 strike drones and about 90 missiles and struck multiple districts of Kyiv and nearby towns.
  • The attack killed at least four people, wounded dozens to more than 80 others, and damaged homes, schools, markets, museums and water infrastructure across the capital region.
  • Ukraine’s air force reported it intercepted the majority of incoming weapons but acknowledged some ballistic missiles penetrated defenses, highlighting a shortfall in interceptors for systems like Patriot.
  • Ukraine and independent reporting confirmed use of the Oreshnik, a new Russian hypersonic intermediate-range missile that can travel at about Mach 10 and is described by Moscow as capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads.
  • European and Western leaders condemned the strike, blamed Moscow’s retaliation claim for recent fighting, and called for urgent deliveries of additional air-defence systems to prevent farther civilian harm.
