Russia Carries Out Massive Strike on Kyiv Using Hypersonic Oreshnik

Moscow says the attack was retaliation and has warned it will begin a systematic campaign against Kyiv’s military‑industrial and command sites.

Overview

  • Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched a large nighttime assault that used roughly 600 drones and about 90 missiles, and that at least one Oreshnik hypersonic missile was among the weapons used.
  • The strikes killed four people and wounded around 86–100 others while damaging scores of residential buildings, museums and government sites despite Ukrainian air defenses shooting down hundreds of incoming drones and missiles.
  • Moscow confirmed the missile types it used, blamed Kyiv for a deadly strike on a student residence in Starobilsk, and on Monday announced planned, systematic attacks on Kyiv’s military‑industrial facilities and command centers.
  • The widening regional tensions included U.S. forces conducting what they called 'self‑defense' strikes on missile platforms and vessels in southern Iran and diplomats reporting ongoing talks in Qatar to try to curb the wider conflict.
  • Across the Levant, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon continued to cause civilian deaths and displacement while Hezbollah said it launched drones and attacks into northern Israel, raising the risk that separate fronts could escalate further.
