Overview
- Ukraine says a coordinated Russian attack in the night of 19–20 August used ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and large numbers of attack drones and caused multiple strikes on Kyiv and other regions with casualty and damage totals revised repeatedly.
- Ukrainian air forces reported shooting down high numbers of incoming weapons, reporting dozens of cruise missiles intercepted and roughly 145–675 drones neutralized across reports as rescue teams cleared impacts on homes, a children’s hospital and schools.
- Fighting on the ground remained intense after the strikes with the General Staff reporting hundreds of clashes and the heaviest pressure on the Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka directions.
- Ukraine reported counter‑strikes inside Russia and occupied areas that hit a Perm oil refinery, airfields and drone storage or launch sites, and the Main Intelligence Directorate said its operators struck airbases used to launch attack drones.
- Western leaders condemned the Russian assaults and urged stepped‑up military and air‑defence aid for Ukraine, while Kyiv warned that more Patriot‑class interceptors and other anti‑ballistic missiles are needed to protect civilians and infrastructure.
