Russell Henley Reaches World Top Five After Colonial Win, Weighs Chasing Distance

The Charles Schwab Challenge victory validated Henley’s accuracy-first game while raising a choice about adding driving power before the Presidents Cup.

Overview

  • This week Henley won the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial to claim his sixth PGA Tour title and move back inside the top five in the Official World Golf Rankings.
  • He closed the tournament with three straight long-range birdies in regulation and sealed the title with a birdie on the first playoff hole against Eric Cole.
  • Statistically Henley ranks near the bottom of the tour for raw driving distance but among the best at finding fairways and he ranks 49th in strokes gained off the tee, which explains his success without long drives.
  • He has begun ramping up heavier workouts and weight training to try to add yards but says gaining muscle is hard during long stretches of the season and he worries extra distance could lead to missed fairways and lost effectiveness.
  • Henley says frustration from missed chances at the Masters and his Ryder Cup tie with Shane Lowry helped fuel his emotional celebration at Colonial and his form now puts him in position to try to 'put things right' at the upcoming Presidents Cup while the tour trends toward longer hitters.
