Run For The 97 Draws Thousands to Stanley Park to Honour Hillsborough Victims

The 5km raised funds for local charities as it honoured Hillsborough families.

Overview

  • Organisers said more than 1,600 people took part in the run on Saturday, May 23, with over 100 virtual entrants joining from countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA.
  • Former Liverpool players Jamie Carragher, Chris Kirkland and Sammy Lee ran alongside Hillsborough family campaigners such as Margaret Aspinall, Sue Roberts and Steve Kelly to lead the remembrance procession.
  • The route passed Walton Lane, Priory Road, Arkles Lane and the Eternal Flame on 97 Avenue outside Anfield, and organisers noted there were no full road closures because most of the course is inside Stanley Park.
  • The event combined family activities and charity partnerships, with Jamie’s 23 Foundation and Liverpool FC Foundation named beneficiaries and a donation point for Fans Supporting Foodbanks on site.
  • Run For The 97, now in its 12th year, has raised more than £45,000 for local causes and continues to serve as a public act of remembrance and a platform for education and campaigning by Hillsborough families.
