RSPCA, Vets Issue Mother's Day Warning Over Toxic Spring Flowers for Pets

Experts urge immediate vet contact for any suspected exposure, with lilies posing a lethal risk to cats.

Overview

  • Veterinary guidance flags six high‑risk spring plants for pets: lilies, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, bluebells and crocus, with bulbs often containing the highest toxin levels.
  • Lilies present the most urgent danger to cats, as even tiny amounts of petals, pollen, leaves or vase water can prove fatal.
  • Owners are advised to remove lily stamens, keep bouquets and bulbs out of reach, and choose pet‑safer alternatives when gifting flowers for Mother’s Day.
  • Reported signs of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, seizures, breathing difficulties, mouth irritation and irregular heartbeat.
  • If ingestion is suspected, contact a vet immediately or call the Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509 000, with the RSPCA also reminding households that chocolate is a frequent cause of pet poisonings.
