Royals and Hallmark Unveil $3 Billion Crown Center Ballpark Plan

Approvals plus a lease will determine whether construction starts in 2027.

Overview

  • The Royals, which on Wednesday announced a partnership with Hallmark, plan a new $1.9 billion stadium at Crown Center within an 85-acre, roughly $3 billion mixed-use redevelopment.
  • Funding would come mostly from the team and private investors, with Kansas City considering up to $600 million in city-backed bonds and Missouri support under the Show-Me Sports Investment Act, and no public vote is required under the current framework.
  • City leaders still must negotiate a term sheet and lease, review the plan through the Parks Board and full council, and secure state financing commitments before work can begin.
  • Hallmark will relocate and build a new headquarters within Crown Center, and Don Hall Jr. said the existing HQ at 2501 McGee Street will be torn down to clear the stadium site, with staff moving to temporary space before the new building opens.
  • The club targets a 2027 groundbreaking and a 2030 opening, which city officials called aggressive, and the move is timed against the RoyalsKauffman Stadium lease that runs through 2031; the team also touts improved walkability, streetcar access, and about 20,000 construction jobs.
